When we think of early fiberglass specials we don’t usually draw the name Almquist, but their early advertising claims that they were the America’s largest custom body maker in 1956. This 1957 car is a total project, but has some interesting lines and a Henry J frame hidden beneath all the grime. If it stays cheap it could be an interesting project. The customized lines make it difficult to tell which of the Almquist models this one started life as. With that grille cover removed, we’d almost guess that this is the smooth-fendered model with lamps in the grille a la Bristol.

Somewhere along the line, tail fins were added with what look like ‘59 Cadillac lamps attached. We’d shave the fins to return it to original, and maybe dream up some different kind of more elegant bumper. There are some seriously weird lines happening around the wheel openings.

The interior features a classic American wheel and column shifter, all of which has been painted yellow. We don’t understand all of the debris on the floor, but we do like to see three pedals instead of two.

The August Employment Report - The latest from the BLS on the employment situation is more of the same.  There was essentially no net job growth -- a decline of 54,000 consisting of a fall in government employment as Census workers finished up that was not quite offset by a rise in private sector employment.  The official unemployment rate went from 9.5 to 9.6 percent and the broadest measure of labor underutilization (U-6) went from 16.5 to 16.7 percent.  There is nothing in here that merits joy.  Expect the spinmeisters to focus on the rise in private sector employment (up 763,000 since the low in December 2009) and the upward revisions (to smaller job losses) from the two prior months.

Beagle Breed Appearance:

The bottle scraper (known as both a flessenschraper (bottle scraper) and flessenlikker (bottle licker) in Dutch) is a Dutch kitchen tool similar to a small spatula. It is specifically designed to scrape the contents of long bottles that would be impossible to reach with other kitchen tools.

The scraper is made of a long shaft, frequently around 30 cm (1 ft) in length. On one side is a small flexible rubber spatula head roughly 4 cm (2 in) in across set perpendicular to the shaft. The head is flexible and usually has a rounded half-circle shape one side useful for scraping round bottles and jars and a flat side with two right angles useful for scraping out cartons. The head is flexible so that it can be pushed into and pulled out of bottles whose mouth is smaller than the fully expanded head of the scraper but larger than the shaft.

It is a common tool in kitchens in the Netherlands and available in many kitchen stores and supermarkets although this may vary by region. It is almost wholly unused and unknown outside of that country.
